Looking back on USA Select's visit - 27/09/2011
Wednesday 14th September saw Team USA Select arrive on the Bishop Otter Campus for a double header of exhibition Basketball matches. Team USA Select are made up of players that have narrowly missed out on professional contacts after competition of their college education, and tour Europe looking to secure playing opportunities. The action started with a friendly between Worthing & Angmering Colleges featuring many of the successful Worthing Thunder under 18 national champions from last season, an eventful match saw Angmering take the spoils with a 59-49 win.
A new look Worthing Thunder squad took to the court next a thrilling match that went back and forth throughout saw Team USA Select Red squad use their greater squad depth, and full court press to edge ahead in the 4th stanza winning the match 90-78. Many of new faces for Thunder impressed with Chris Talley top scoring for 24 points, top scorer for Team USA Jefferson with 15 points.
The next match on court was the first of the evening’s double header with the University of Chichester Thunder National Division 4 South squad against the might of the first Team USA Select squad. With 8 players graduating the University fielded an experimental line-up featuring several new faces hoping to secure their spot for the forthcoming season. As well as players from the public & the University the squad featured Angmering College’s Joe Carter & Julian Stanley. Despite the illustrious opposition the University started strongly with Nyathi scoring the opening 2 baskets, Julian Stanley & Carter impressing early as a close opening stanza saw Team USA lead 16-9.
The 2nd stanza belonged to Sam Johnson scoring 11 including 2 late 3’s and a spin move to the basket that left the American guard in his wake. Team USA’s Pappas responded with 8 points as they stretched their lead out at the break 44-24. The 3rd stanza saw Carter impress again with some early scores, but again the greater cohesion and squad depth saw Team USA extend their lead through Fraser & Pappas. With the University tiring & Team USA rotating their bench to great effect a further 21 points were added as an enthralling match finished 85-50 to Team USA, top scorers Sam Johnson & Jermelle Fraser both with 17 points.
