Worthing Thunder under-14 won the national title as they defeated London Thunder Lewisham 87-72 in the NBL Playoff championship game at Belle Vue on Sunday afternoon.
Cameron Hildreth led Thunder with a game-high 34 points and seven rebounds. Abdou Gaye added a 21-point, 12-rebound double-double for the winners who made it a double winning weekend for the Worthing Thunder junior program.
Saul Iwowo led London in defeat with 13 points.
Like their under-16s before them, Worthing fell behind early but responded in the second quarter as a basket by Cameron Hildreth tied the score at 24-24 and even though the London side regained the lead, Worthing were close behind. A score by Josh Hicklebottom gave the Thunder the lead, which grew to double-digits at the half.
Worthing’s momentum carried onto the third quarter where they led by as many as 16 points thanks a score from Hicklebottom. However, Lewisham finished the quarter strong, narrowing the deficit to single digits at the end of the period. Worthing still enjoyed a 63-55 advantage heading into the fourth.
Worthing though quickly restored their ten-point lead early in the last period thanks to a bucket by Hildreth and from there; Worthing’s lead remained in double-digits as the boys from London fatigued.
