Worthing Thunder’s Zaire Taylor has been named the NBL Division 1 MVP for the 2017-18 season.

In his first season with the club since joining from British Basketball League side London Lions last summer, Taylor has led the league in scoring with 26.1 points a game and in steals with 3.4 a game.

Taylor also averaged 5.6 assists a game and recorded Thunder’s only triple-double this season in their away win against Lancashire Spinners that confirmed their involvement in the playoffs.

Despite capturing the award, Taylor paid tribute to Loughborough Student Riders coach Mark Jerram, who claimed the Division 1’s Coach of the Year.

“Before I address winning the award I first want to give a big congratulations to Mark Jerram on winning Coach of the Year”, says Taylor.

“It always feels good when your talent, hard work or efforts are recognised or appreciated. But to be honest, it’s not what you play the game for, the individual accolades. I play to win and maybe when the season is over or my career is over I can look back and appreciate these accomplishments on a greater level.

“But the only thing I want to accomplish in this moment is bringing a championship back to Worthing that has been long overdue.”

In addition to Taylor’s MVP trophy, Worthing Thunder have also won awards, off the court as well with the club winning best game night experience, Dave Marshall winning the best match night commentator and the team winning the best social media award.

All of the players, officials and supporters at Worthing Thunder would like to extend their congratulations to Zaire Taylor who has been awarded the Division 1 MVP as well as the awards for leading scorer and leading in steals,” Thunder chairman Frank Gainsbury said.

“Whilst these awards are a monumental personal achievement for Zaire, I am sure that he would acknowledge that such successes could not have happened without the contribution made by his fellow team-mates.

“I am also, absolutely proud and delighted that the work of our amazing volunteers and supporters has been recognised with Basketball England’s awards for Best Game Day Experience, Best social media and best match night commentator.

“Worthing Thunder has always sought to provide an all-round match-night experience for their fans and these awards are thoroughly well deserved and a fantastic reward for all the incredibly hard work that so many people contribute to make the club the success that it is on and off-court.

“These awards conclude an amazing turn-around for the club over the last twelve months and we look forward to developing the club further in the forthcoming season.”
